Egypt: Infant formula recalled due to “Cerulide” contamination
The Egyptian Cabinet announced on Wednesday that the National Food Safety Authority has decided to withdraw a limited number of batches of infant formula products produced by Nestlé as a precaution, due to the detection of traces of a substance that may cause severe nausea and vomiting in children.
The council added, quoting a statement from the authority, that the decision was taken “in light of an official notification received by it (the authority) from Nestle Egypt , stating that a voluntary precautionary withdrawal of these batches has been implemented.”
The statement read: “The National Food Safety Authority confirms that this measure is precautionary and proactive, as part of its commitment to protecting the health and safety of consumers, especially children.”
The agency stated that the reason for the precautionary withdrawal was “the detection of traces of cerulide , produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria (Bacillus cereus), in one of the primary ingredients used in manufacturing.”
She explained that it is “a substance that, if exposed to it, may lead to severe nausea and vomiting, especially in children .”
She added that the precautionary withdrawal would begin immediately starting Wednesday, with the withdrawal procedures being carried out in full coordination with Nestlé.
Nestlé said late Monday that it would recall some batches of infant formula products due to the potential presence of a ” toxic substance that could cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.”
On Tuesday, it stated that it had issued notices to withdraw certain batches of products in several countries.
