Choosing the right yogurt: a decision that determines the course of your health.
A nutritionist revealed a set of guidelines to help consumers choose the best types of yogurt to suit their health needs, stressing that this product is an important source of protein and calcium regardless of the type of milk used in its manufacture.
Nutritionist Mandhi Har explained to Verywell Health that yogurt contains beneficial bacteria that act as probiotics in the small intestine, promoting digestive health.
But she stressed the need to read the nutritional information label and the ingredients list, because the composition of products varies from one type to another, and may include additives such as starch or artificial flavors and colors, which are usually harmless but do not offer any significant nutritional benefit.
Har advised choosing plain, unsweetened yogurt to reduce sugar intake, with the option of adding a small amount of sugar, maple syrup, or fresh fruit if desired. She also emphasized the importance of being mindful of added sugars in flavored varieties, as these can raise blood sugar levels more than naturally occurring lactose.
She added that the protein in yogurt helps promote a feeling of fullness for a longer period by slowing down the digestive process, making it a good choice for maintaining stable energy and controlling sugar levels.
She also pointed out that plant-based yogurt made from soy, almond, or cashew milk may be a suitable alternative for those who avoid dairy products, while taking into account its fat and calorie content.
The specialist concluded by emphasizing that there is no single type that is ideal for everyone, as the best choice depends on the person’s nutritional needs, health goals, and portion size.
