Researchers develop a model to predict organ aging.

Researchers from Xi’an Jiaotong University in China have developed a new model for predicting the degree of aging of human organs, including the brain, allowing for an accurate assessment of aging levels in each organ.

Previous research has focused mainly on the common features of overall aging or on the mechanisms of aging in isolated organs, which has made it difficult to decipher the distinct genetic patterns and molecular pathways associated with the aging of different organs. This deficiency has hindered a deeper understanding of the nature of aging and has limited the development and implementation of accurate strategies to combat it.

The study specifically selected (554) genes at risk of organ aging that exhibit functions highly consistent with the physiological characteristics of their respective organs, revealing the basic molecular mechanisms behind the aging process in each organ.

The new model demonstrates strong and accurate predictive capabilities for assessing organ aging status across diverse population groups, laying the foundation for future mechanistic research and clinical applications.

The researchers noted that the new model will facilitate early screening of at-risk groups, and clarify the causal relationships between organ aging and chronic diseases, as well as the effect of smoking on the aging of certain organs, which provides crucial insights and evidence for disease prevention.
