Without a gym… a simple habit to improve health and lose weight
Recent scientific studies and health experts have revealed that simple daily walking can be an effective tool for burning calories, accelerating weight loss, and improving overall health, without the need for a gym membership or expensive equipment.
According to a report in the British Daily Mail, research indicates that regular walking significantly reduces the risk of heart disease , dementia, and some types of cancer , as well as improving insulin sensitivity and limiting fat storage in the body.
Studies show that walking for just 10 minutes a day can yield significant health benefits, yet the average Briton takes only 5,951 steps daily, far below the level associated with the greatest health gains. In contrast, Sheffield boasts the highest walking rate in the country, with an average of 7,209 steps per day.
A large scientific analysis published last year, which included data from about 160,000 people from nearly 60 studies, indicated that walking 7,000 steps a day is sufficient to achieve significant health benefits, including reducing the risk of heart disease by 25 percent, dementia by 38 percent, and reducing the risk of several types of cancer and depression.
Experts explained that the pace of walking is just as important as the number of steps, as brisk walking raises the heart rate to what they described as the ideal metabolic point for burning fat.
A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine confirmed that people who walked briskly for 15 minutes a day were less likely to die than others.
Experts, including Welsh personal trainer Anwyn Davies, also stressed the importance of proper walking technique, such as arm movement and foot contact, as well as incorporating hills and stairs or carrying light weights to increase energy expenditure, while warning against overdoing it for those with health problems.
Experts confirmed that walking after meals helps regulate blood sugar, and that consistent, moderate walking may be more effective in the long run than intermittent, intense exercise.
