A modern treatment that protects vision: Your comprehensive guide to intravitreal injections.
The modern concept of intravitreal injection began to emerge in the twentieth century, coinciding with the development of examination and sterilization tools.
This procedure was initially used to treat infections inside the eye , before later expanding to include retinal diseases.
Consultant in ophthalmology and eye surgery, Anas Ghoshdar, explains that intravitreal injection is a quick, safe and effective medical procedure, as it allows the drug to be delivered directly to the retina, which increases its effectiveness compared to traditional treatments.
Why is intravitreal injection used in the eye?
Joshdar adds, in an interview with the “Your Health” program on “Al-Araby 2”, that its widespread use is due to its major role in preserving eyesight and reducing its deterioration, despite the sensitivity of the eye as a delicate organ.
This type of injection is used to treat a number of common eye diseases, including diabetic retinopathy , age-related macular degeneration, and some cases of inflammation inside the eye.
According to the doctor, injections may be a definitive treatment in some cases, while in other cases they are used to control the disease and prevent its progression, depending on the type of injury and the eye’s response to treatment.
How is the injection process carried out?
The injection procedure inside the vitreous body is simple and quick, and takes only a few seconds.
It is often painless, as only topical anesthesia is used via eye drops, eliminating the need for injections. The eye and surrounding area are thoroughly sterilized before the medication is injected into the eye within seconds.
Today, intravitreal injections remain one of the basic and routine treatments in ophthalmology, and have contributed significantly to protecting the vision of millions of patients around the world, and preventing its deterioration in cases that previously led to vision loss.
