8 foods to improve mood and prevent depression
Nutrition plays an important role in supporting mental health, as some foods can contribute to improving mood by regulating brain chemistry, stimulating the production of happiness-related hormones such as dopamine, and reducing inflammation, anxiety, and blood sugar level disturbances.
According to the “Fairwell Health” website, there are eight foods that research has shown can support mood in the long term, and it is recommended to include them in a balanced diet.
1- Fatty fish
Fish like salmon, sardines, and tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which support brain structure and function. Studies suggest that people who eat fish regularly are less likely to suffer from depression than those who don’t.
2- Dark chocolate
Research has shown that dark chocolate with a high cocoa content helps reduce stress and negative feelings, and promotes positive feelings, due to cocoa compounds and their effect on the gut-brain axis.
3- Bananas
Eating bananas as part of a balanced diet is linked to improved mood and overall mental health. Studies in young adults have shown that those who eat them regularly report improved mental well-being.
4- Fermented foods
Such as yogurt and kefir, as research links them to improved mood through their effect on gut microbes and the communication network between the digestive system, brain, and immune system.
5- Nuts and seeds
Studies suggest that consuming nuts and seeds is associated with a reduction in depressive symptoms. Extensive analyses have shown that people who regularly consume them are less likely to report negative psychological symptoms.
6- Whole grains
Such as oats, brown rice, and whole wheat bread, researchers have found that consuming them is associated with lower symptoms of anxiety and depression compared to refined grains.
7- Leafy green vegetables
Such as spinach and kale, as scientific reviews have shown that increased consumption of leafy green vegetables and fruits is associated with reduced psychological distress and symptoms of depression.
8- Eggs
Studies have indicated that regular egg consumption is associated with a reduction in symptoms of depression, especially among the elderly, due to its content of nutrients important for brain function.
