Dry eyes: Your comprehensive guide to relieving symptoms

Dry eye is a common problem that affects many people of different ages. It often results from insufficient tear production or rapid tear evaporation.

Dry eyes cause discomfort, burning, and sometimes blurred vision, which affects quality of life.

Tips to relieve symptoms

To help alleviate symptoms and maintain eye health and visual comfort, it is recommended to follow the following tips and guidelines:

  1. Use preservative-free moisturizing drops several times a day. A moisturizing gel or ointment is suitable before bedtime.
  2. Follow the 20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (about 6 meters) away for 20 seconds;
  3. Make sure  the screen is positioned slightly below eye level to minimize eyelid opening and thus reduce evaporation;
  4. Use a humidifier in your home or office, especially in winter, to improve the surrounding environment;
  5. Avoid sitting under air conditioners or directly in front of fans;
  6. Apply warm compresses to the eye  for five minutes daily;
  7. Gently clean the edges of the eyelids using a warm washcloth or a dedicated solution;
  8. Adopt a good diet: Eat foods rich in omega-3 such as salmon, walnuts and flax seeds to improve tear quality;
  9. Wear sunglasses that wrap around the eyes  to protect them from wind and dust;

However, if the dryness is severe and persistent, or if there is severe redness, pain, or a change in vision, or if you wear contact lenses and are experiencing persistent discomfort, you should see a doctor immediately.
