Health warning. U.S. records poisoning of dozens of children with contaminated milk
U.S. health officials said Friday that full-fat milk powder used to make baby formula produced by Bay Heart could be a source of contamination that has led to outbreaks of food poisoning that have left dozens of children vulnerable.
Tests by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found a type of bacteria that can cause illness in two samples linked to infant formula, officials said.
The department found that the bacteria in an unopened milk can matched a sample from a sick child, as well as contamination detected in samples of organic whole milk powder used to make baby formula at Bay Heart that were collected and tested by the company.
FDA tests also found contamination in a sample of Whole Milk Powder supplied to Bay Heart, which matched the germ found in a final sample of the company’s milk.
The department said in a statement that the findings were not conclusive and that an investigation was ongoing “to determine the source of the contamination.”
